I guess, from what I've heard, everyone wants to know the story about how a successful company came to be. I can see why... to build a relationship with their clients... to empower others... to show that baby steps, hardships and the need to be accomplished will lead to success. Well, Here's our story.
Did you know that Jewels of Lara wasn't legally established till 2013. Prior to that it was nothing more than a hobby to help raise funds for schools and local charities and causes. Once my daughter (Lara) was born, the name came to me in a dream one night. Jewels of Lara had a special ring to it. It was perfect. It is operated by 3 generations of strong willed ladies; myself (Laila), my mother (Sahar) and daughter(Lara). Although she's just a little princess at the moment, she is very creative and helps design the majority of our Children's Collection.
In 2009, My husband and I were Blessed with the pregnancy of my daughter. I was sick 24/7 with no way of escaping it. My Doctor suggested I find a hobby to distract my mind of the constant struggle and help pass the time. JoAnn's, Michaels and Hobby Lobby instantly became my second home.
My youngest brother at the time was still an 8th grader and mom (naturally) was very involved in school and had suggested that she bring the pieces I make to sell for the holidays as a donation to the PTA to help purchase supplies or fund end of the year school activities for the kids. It instantly became a hit. Kids were so happy to purchase items for their loved ones other than the usual flower, or card they made in art.
Fast forward 4 years, we joined the social network life and began customizing and personalizing pieces to order. We are now Retailers, Distributors, Event Promotors and Vendors traveling to various events bringing unique quality accessories to our clients. We specialize in Bridal Accessories & Hangers, Evil Eye & Quality Fashion Jewelry, and Personalized Necklaces and Bracelets. We hosted our first Fashion Show case in May 2014 showcasing local fashion Icons, Designers, Hair & Make up Stylists, Performers and much more! I was so proud of everyone who helped make my vision a reality. ( View our Showcase Here! ) I've always been a fashion fanatic and so passionate about being apart of the industry since my childhood days. Here's to proving dreams do come true, but you gotta work hard for it and push through the rainy days!
And here we are today! An established Retailer and Distributor while still keeping our mission in mind to deliver quality pieces at affordable prices and always giving back!
In 2014, We decided to open a storefront. We were so excited! I chose Westland,MI because it would be centered to all of our customers. Per Lara's request we included a kids dress up service so that the kids could play while moms shopped. It was the perfect plan. We held sip & shop events to bring in women who were just starting their business and it was amazing! It wasn't long after we moved in that we began facing obstacles. We were Arab women coming into an all white community. I guess you can figure out how that was for us. My mom as you can see from the picture above wears a head scarf. They didn't like that very much. We were harrassed by locals and threatened twice. We were in constant arguments with our plaza neighbor which didn't make anything any easier. But my stubbornness was very insistent on changing their opinions and views. April 2015 marked our second threat and it came at a time where there were murders in the city and hate crimes were on the rise. One night my mom was taking out the garbage just like any other night. A group of young men pointed out my mom and said "Heyyyy there's an Arab in this city yo!" another guy says "Damn we ain't got non them here" I think that was it for me. We had just finished shooting a commercial that day and remodeling parts of the store. I told my mom that we were done with this. That she would never have fear being at the store alone and have to hear another idiot make a stupid comment again.
The very Next day we packed everything up and never turned back. It took us one year of garbage to realize God had a better plan for us. We began focusing on our partners and better servicing their needs and providing more in house options for their clients.
Always trust your gut instinct but even more... always trust your mothers gut instinct!
Did I have any Idea I would be where I am today?
No. my parents always envisioned me as a Lawyer and I went on to fulfill their wishes but soon realized i couldn't do something i didn't love.
When was your IT moment?
My IT moment came when I began talking to my friends about collaborating in 2013. It was kind of a no brainer when more than half of your friends are either stylists or business women. Who knew it would open so many opportunities!
Who was your first Distributor?
Our first collaboration was with Salon West. For this reason Salon West holds a big part of my heart. The girls are so amazing and truly talented. I have built a sister bond with a few of them and they are the most sincere girls I have met. Love you Dolls!
Do you still give back?
YES! Always. I don't think i'Il ever turn down the opportunity to help when I can. Its what brought me to this point now.
